The short version
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking across apps or websites.
- No sign-up. We never ask for your email address, phone number or real name.
- Solo play stays on your phone. Nothing is sent to us.
- If you set up a family, we store the family name, the names you give people and phones, and which countries each person has collected, so your phones stay in step.
- Family photos for your own questions stay on the phone that added them.
- You can remove people and phones in the app, or ask us to erase your whole family.
1. Who we are
Quartography (“we”, “us”) makes the Quartography geography card game: the iPhone and Android apps, the browser game at quartography.xyz/play and this website. This policy covers all of them.
Questions about privacy go to [email protected].
2. Data that stays on your device
The game saves its progress in the app's own storage on your phone (in the browser, in the site's local storage). This includes:
- your atlas (the countries you have collected), daily challenge streaks and game history;
- settings such as language, look, sound, vibration and difficulty level;
- player names and levels you set up for Family play on that phone;
- family questions you write, and any photos you attach to them.
This data is not sent to us. It is removed when you delete the app (or clear the browser's site data). The website itself remembers only whether you turned its background music on.
3. Family sync (optional)
If you create or join a family so that several phones share the same people and atlases, our server stores:
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Family name and its join code | So other phones can find and join your family. |
| Parent PIN, stored only as a salted scrypt hash | So only a parent can change family settings and confirm stakes. We cannot read your PIN. |
| Names you give each phone, and when it was last used | So you can see and remove the phones in your family. |
| A random token per phone, stored only as a SHA-256 hash | To recognise your phone when it syncs. It is not linked to your device ID, advertising ID or Apple / Google account. |
| Each person's display name, level and avatar choice | To show the same people on every phone. |
| The countries each person has collected | To keep each person's atlas the same on every phone. |
| Family stakes you confirm | To share the family's stakes list between phones. |
A display name can be a first name or a nickname. You don't need to use anyone's full or real name, and we suggest you don't.
4. Live play
When you play Live with people on other phones, you choose a name to show at the table and share a short room code. While the room is open, our server passes the name, the room code and the moves of the game between the players. Rooms are held in memory only. They are not written to our database, and they are discarded when the game ends or the room expires.
5. Daily challenge scores
Where the app shows shared daily challenge results or leaderboards, a person's result (questions right, time taken, whether they won), their display name and their family name are stored with the family and may be shown to other players on those boards. Solo daily challenge results that are not shared stay on your phone.
6. Server logs
Like any website or online service, our servers and our network provider receive technical details with each request, such as IP address, time, the page or address requested and the browser or app version. We use these only to run the service, keep it secure and fix problems. We keep them for a short time and don't use them to build profiles of anyone.
7. Phone permissions
- Photos and camera (only when you choose to add a photo to a family question). The photo stays on your phone.
- Internet, for family sync and Live play. The rest of the game works offline.
- Vibration, for game feedback. You can turn it off in Settings.
We don't ask for your location, contacts, microphone or any other permission.
8. What we don't do
- We don't show ads or include advertising SDKs.
- We don't use analytics, crash-reporting or tracking tools in the apps.
- We don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
- We don't sell, rent or trade personal data.
- We don't use cookies for tracking on this website.
- There are no in-app purchases.
10. Children
Quartography is made to be played by families, children included. We designed it so that children can play without giving us personal information:
- There are no accounts, no email and no chat.
- A family is set up by a parent, protected by a parent PIN.
- Players are known only by the display name chosen for them, which can be a nickname.
- There are no ads, no tracking and no purchases.
If you are a parent and want us to delete data about your child, follow the steps on Delete your data or write to [email protected].
11. How long we keep data, and deleting it
We keep family data for as long as the family uses Quartography. If no phone in a family has synced for 24 months, we may delete that family.
- In the app, a parent can remove a person or a phone from the family at any time.
- To erase everything, including the family, its people, phones and atlases, write to us from the address on Delete your data. We delete it within 30 days and confirm when it's done.
- Data on your phone is removed when you delete the app.
12. Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EU and UK, or the CCPA in California), you can ask to see the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or receive a copy. Write to [email protected] with your family code so we can find it. We'll reply within 30 days. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
Where the GDPR applies, we process family data to provide the features you ask for (performance of a contract), and server logs for our legitimate interest in running a secure service.
Your data may be processed in countries other than your own. When it is, we rely on the safeguards our providers offer, such as standard contractual clauses.
13. Security
All traffic between the app and our server is encrypted (HTTPS). Parent PINs and phone tokens are stored only as hashes, and families are separated from each other on the server. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect what we store and to keep it small.
14. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. If a change significantly affects how we use your data, we'll say so in the app before it takes effect.
